| Description: |
If you want to hear the same tube as in the AQ 1009 845 DT, but in a true class-A Single-Ended Triode (SET) design, I commend to your attention the ASL AQ 1006 845 DT monoblocs. With 22 wpc from the single 845 output tube a 6SN7 triode front end, and a KT-66 tube for driving duty, this $3495/pair amplifier is still one of the best values in SETs out there on the market today. In its earlier form, this was the very first SET amplifier that I heard drive my beloved Horning speakers several years ago when I got a set of the Alkibiades model for review in The Abso!ute Sound. Despite using the same tube as the AQ 1009 845 DT, these amplifiers have a more crisp and slightly leaner sonic signature. Unlike many SET designs that can tend to sound a little sloppy or ill-defined, especially at the frequency extremes, the AQ 1006 845 DT is more nimble and quick than is the norm for such amplifiers. And the 22 wpc these things generate goes a lot farther than many other designs that offer anywhere from 3 to maybe 15-20 watts. If you have a speaker system that has a smooth 6-8 ohm impedance and weighs in at 93-94 db/watt or better, these amplifiers may well need to be on your short list. While not dirt cheap, they are much less expensive than many alternatives from companies like Art Audio or Air Tight, and the sound they make is definitely in the same league, just at a more Minor League price. |
